With High Point Market around the corner, we are giving you the inside scoop on inspiration and trends from trend forecasting expert, Jay Mize and interior designer, Jeff Andrews.

High Point Market is the design industry’s equivalent to Fashion Week and happens twice a year (also like Fashion Week), every April and October. Because High Point is right around the corner, we are shining a light on how the fashion world sets the scene for design trends across the board, including interior and furniture design.

Fashion & Furniture: From Inspiration to Design

We sat down with trend forecasting expert, Jay Mize, to walk us through how fashion and culture influence furniture and interior design when it comes to designing a High Fashion Home.

Q: In your work as a trend forecaster and expert, how do you find that fashion influences interior design trends and vice versa?

Fashion and design trends influence each other simultaneously, mostly stemming from what we are seeing first from the art world. Consumers are fast-paced thanks to technology, thus flow in even time; therefore, usually fashion and design move and synonymous speeds. If we see something trending in fashion, it will typically hit within a few months in home interiors and vice versa.

However, with home trends, it’s more of the concept of the movement, such as “Essentialism” or “Slow Living” that affects fashion versus the color or print. This is because home interiors tend to be slightly more conservative or paralleled down for product development to fit within the consumer needs. Soft goods, wall coverings, accessories, etc will be less conservative with prints, color, and embellishments versus hard goods and furniture, which consumers tend to want to have longer, less trendy lifespans.

Q: What trends are you seeing flow down from fashion into interior design right now?

Essentialism and Glamour are the biggest trends flowing down from fashion currently. Consumers are entering a life cycle of wanting fewer, better things. We have lived in over-consumption and are now wanting to shed our skin of excess, thus Essentialism encompasses the demand for products that streamline routines and adjust to smaller, multi-functional spaces. Millennials have a lesser desire to inherit heirlooms but, rather, are looking for few, better things to fit their needs and older generations are following suit.

Glamour is seen in almost every design aspect today, from minimalist to grand scales, as consumers are craving sophistication in their everyday. We are a much more educated society today with the internet on our side. We are seeing this come through interiors with an aspect of glam shining through in almost every trend, from industrial to shabby chic, as if consumers want a cleaner, sleeker, more modern version of the previous renditions we are used to.

Glamour is also coming through in sustainable ways, as many consumers are looking for new ways to integrate their spaces with the latest tech invention that has eco-impact. You can’t flip through a fashion or design magazine today without it feeling slightly more sophisticated and refined than in seasons past.

Q: Based on current fashion trends, what should we expect to see in interior design in the near future? In other words, what future trends are you predicting for interiors based on today’s fashion trends?

The biggest trend on the horizon is Slow Living, as consumers are really looking for ways to slow down their every day and disconnect to reconnect with the world around them. This is affecting every industry from beauty to the home. I’m seeing brands exploring ways that re-engage the consumer with their surroundings, making them stop for a second.

Q: Since fashion and interior design are so closely intertwined, how can someone’s personal style when it comes to their wardrobe, inform the way they decorate their home?

It all starts with taking that favorite item and finding items that match it for the home, whether it be a color, an embellishment or a print. Anything can really be an inspiration. We are truly seeing personalization take full force in the home as consumers are no longer applying the cookie cutter approach of sets of furniture in their home, instead really incorporating a mix and match effect to create their own personal style.

Bringing the Inspiration into the Home with Jeff Andrews

So, how do you bring the trends to the actual interior design of a home? For Jeff Andrews, interior designer and author of the book, New Glamour: Interiors with Star Quality, staying on top of the most current techniques and designs is a must when it comes to designing a high fashion home.

From Kourtney Kardashian to Kris Jenner to Kaley Cuoco, Jeff Andrews creates sophisticated yet livable interiors for families and celebrities alike. And when asked about trends, “We tend to catch the trends early, as we are working with the smaller artisans who start a lot of trends, especially being based in California,” says Jeff. “If a client likes to follow design trends, you create spaces for that, and they become the opportunities to bring in an on-trend fabric.  Rooms should always evolve.”

“These are creative people in their own right, so most often, they are far more interested in something unique than something on trend.  Major design projects that include construction or many renovations can easily take over a year, so we create a timeless look that draws from a variety of styles and create a unique mix for each client, celebrity or otherwise.”

Be sure to come by the Gabby High Point showroom, for a special book signing event with Jeff Sunday, April 7 from 11 AM to 1 PM. We look forward to seeing you there!
