Reflecting on 2019 to look ahead to 2020 interior design business
For Connie Vernich and the design team at Verich Interiors, December is dedicated to appreciation. The month is spent celebrating special client relationships, as well as their own success stories. For the holidays, each interior design client receives a “personal and meaningful” holiday gift. (Brainstorming often begins in August.) “This year we’ve found coffee table books that suit each of our clients’ personalities and interests,” Connie shares, “We have a client that is a beekeeper as a hobby so we found a book on bees and recipes that involve honey!”
Before the studio breaks for holiday festivities, the team gathers for a reflection on the year’s milestones. In 2019, Vernich Interiors was featured in The Cottage Journal’s summer edition (their first national publication) and included in HGTV’s prestigious Fresh Faces of Design competition. Connie is also excited to announce that their work will be published in a cabin-themed design book, which will be released in 2020.
New Year, New Goals: Designer Q&A with Connie Vernich of Vernich Interiors
Connie shares her end-of-year traditions, from reviewing business analytics to setting clear goals and objectives.
1. As we close the chapter on another successful year, how do you prepare for the exciting new year ahead?
Reflect and analyze! Our team is big on highs and lows. We review our projects at the end of the year and celebrate the successes as well as reflect on areas that we could improve upon. We are constantly trying to think of ways to work more efficiently and grow our business in the direction that makes the most sense for our team.
2. What can designers do now to ensure that 2020 kicks off to a successful start?
Review your past year! We have made significant improvements in our business from reviewing our best and worst projects from the previous year. You’ll see where you are spending money with minimal returns and areas you can improve. This has not only increased our profitability, but allowed us to be more strategic on projects we take on.
3. Please tell us about your 2020 goals! We would love to know what’s fueling your fire, from building your business to trying new design trends.
In 2019 we had a lot of internal restructuring and made some key new hires that have made our business stronger and more organized than ever before. Now that we are functioning at a higher level, we have the capability to shift our focus to marketing. Our goal in 2020 is to increase our brand awareness and social media presence in the design community.

New Year’s Resolutions: The Power of Planning
Vernich Interiors designs a successful future with goal setting and strategic action.
Vernich Interiors is serious about setting New Year’s resolutions. Connie shares, “Our team sits down in January to put in writing our objectives in terms of profit margins, social media markers, individual professional aspirations, as well as press goals.” Beginning the year with clear intentions helps her “slim, but mighty” team evaluate their common objectives.
What’s the key to setting good business goals? Connie has discovered that identifying the “action item” is essential to growth. She explains, “We had four areas we focused on in 2019 which were to revamp internal systems to improve organization, increase profitability, get published nationally, and increase our social media following.” With these objectives in mind, Vernich Interiors dedicated time to creating new internal documents and systems, which helped to streamline processes and keep the design studio organized.
Connie is equally transparent about falling short of their goals, confidently admitting that Vernich Interiors hit three out of four team targets in 2019. “One goal we didn’t accomplish was hitting 10K followers on Instagram,” she shares, “While this was a huge bummer, we’ve extended grace to ourselves and reflected on the immense internal changes we’ve made this past year.” With this spirit of resilience and resolve, Vernich Interiors is more than ready to take on a new decade in style. We can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring for this tenacious team of design stars!
