The golden era of elegance and extravagance is back! Take a look inside this modern-luxe master bedroom with interior designer Sam Cram.

One-hundred years after the glitz and glamour of the Roaring 20’s, the popularity of Art Deco design has returned, sending jazzy vibrations throughout the interior design industry. Today, designers across the globe are referencing the Jazz Age by embracing the era’s most popular design elements, like geometric forms, shimmering metals and decadent color palettes.

Want to incorporate 20’s-style luxury into your home decor? Take notes from Sam Cram, owner of Nashville-based design studio Sam Cram Design, who designed her own bedroom with luxurious Art Deco inspiration. Follow along as we take an exclusive look inside her elegant hideaway!

Inspired by glamorous elements of the Art Deco movement, Sam Cram designed this luxe-modern interior with geometry, texture and graphic shades of black and white.

Sam Cram’s Vintage-Meets-Modern Bedroom Makeover
This interior designer’s luxe master bedroom is brimming with Art Deco elegance.

When interior designer Sam Cram returned to Nashville, Tennessee, her first priority was creating a chic bedroom sanctuary where she could rest and restore her creativity. Working with an elegant palette of black, white and cream, Sam selected furnishings that felt luxuriously modern, like sheepskin and metal chairs paired with a fabric-wrapped ottoman.

Suspended above Sam’s plush upholstered bed, a unique glass chandelier brightens the room. “Light fixtures are the jewelry of any space, just like accessories are in fashion,” she explains. “They make or break a space and can totally take it to the next level.” What’s the easiest way to add a touch of Art Deco flair to your interior decor? Sam suggests adding a vintage-inspired chandelier or table lamp. For 2020 clients, she plans to source lighting styles that are “inspired by the 1920’s era, but also updated, fresh, and current.”

Sam’s favorite Art Deco design elements include “cubism, streamlined furniture, and brass—tons of brass.”

Sam gravitates toward pieces that showcase sleek silhouettes and opulent finishes: “I draw a lot of my inspiration from fashion. The Art Deco time period is notorious for geometric shapes, long lines, elaborate fringe, and my favorite—glam accessories!”

The 5 Essential Elements of Art Deco Interior Design
Mix, match and layer these five elements to create the Art Deco interior of your dreams.

1. Large-Scale Furnishings: Sparked by post-war prosperity, 1920’s and 1930’s interior design trends highlighted roomy seating styles and other furnishings with eye-catching volume and weight. Choose sofas and chairs with deep seating and spacious case goods for an authentic look. The bigger, the better!

2. Metallic Details: Shining metal accents add flash and flair. Driven by new technology, chrome, brass and gold details were abundant in most Art Deco interiors. For a dose of modern opulence, play with mixed metal finishes.

3. Print and Pattern: Be sure to incorporate at least one eye-pleasing pattern. The options are virtually endless, with popular Art Deco prints including geometric forms, bold botanical prints, and celestial patterns.

4. Global Accents & Accessories: 1920s socialites had a taste for the exotic, making travel-inspired accessories a popular interior accent. (For example, sculptures from Egypt or animal skins from Africa.) For a little extra sparkle, incorporate crystals or semi-precious stones into the mix. Get the look with alabaster lamps from Gabby.

5. Bold Color Palettes: Many Art Deco-era bon vivants filled their homes with jewel-like shades of amethyst, ruby red, emerald green, and more, often mixing vibrant hues to create a dazzling fantasy world of color. If you prefer a more subtle approach, tonal and neutral color palettes also lend 1920’s-style allure.

Bold accessories are essential to Art Deco interior design. Embrace the exotic with animal prints and global-inspired accents and antiquities.
